Roulette strategy Australia (2026)

Unlike blackjack, no strategy changes the house edge in roulette. But picking the right table and bet type still matters. Here's the honest breakdown.

Updated 24 April 2026

European vs American — always pick European

VersionPocketsHouse edgeEven-money payback
European roulette37 (0, 1-36)2.70%A$97.30 / A$100
French roulette (La Partage)371.35%A$98.65 / A$100
American roulette38 (0, 00, 1-36)5.26%A$94.74 / A$100

Reality check

American roulette returns A$2.56 less per A$100 bet than European. Over a 100-spin session at A$5 a spin, that's A$12.80 extra lost. If a casino only offers American, find a different casino.

Bet types and true odds

BetPayoutWin probability (EU)House edge
Straight (single number)35:12.7%2.7%
Split (2 numbers)17:15.4%2.7%
Street (3 numbers)11:18.1%2.7%
Corner (4 numbers)8:110.8%2.7%
Column / Dozen (12)2:132.4%2.7%

Every bet has the same 2.7% house edge on European. Picking straight-up vs red/black changes variance, not expected loss.

The betting systems (all fail)

Martingale — doubling after losses

Bet A$5, lose. Bet A$10, lose. Bet A$20, lose. Bet A$40, win — you're up A$5. Sounds great until you hit 8 losses in a row and need to bet A$1,280 to recover A$5. Most tables cap at A$500–$1,000 max bet, killing the system. Mathematical expectation is still –2.7% per bet.

Fibonacci, D'Alembert, Labouchere

All variations of "bet more when losing." All face the same wall: the house edge applies to every single spin, regardless of the bet pattern. Over enough spins, you lose 2.7% of total wagered, period.

Anti-martingale (reverse) — doubling after wins

Ride winning streaks. Safer bankroll impact, but you only profit if you guess when to stop. Same long-run expectation.

There is no winning system

If a YouTuber or "roulette coach" is selling you a system, they make money from the course — not from roulette. Every independent mathematician since Henri Poincaré has confirmed this. Save your cash.

What actually helps

  1. Only play European or French. Never American.
  2. Find a table with La Partage or En Prison. House edge halves on even-money bets.
  3. Set a loss limit before you sit down. Walk when you hit it.
  4. Small stakes, long session. Variance works in your favour on short sessions — if you quit when ahead.
  5. Skip the side bets. "Neighbours" and "Orphelins" bets have the same 2.7% edge but higher variance.

Live vs RNG roulette

RNG (software) roulette spins faster — 50+ spins/hour vs ~30 at a live table. This multiplies your exposure to the house edge. Live dealer is slower, which preserves your bankroll longer. For entertainment value and lower hourly loss, pick live.
